Web Site Hosting
Most Web design firms doing Web sites for small businesses and organizations, tend to bundle the Web site, hosting, and domain name together as a single service. If you already have a Web site, then you may know that these are actually separate services.
Domain Name
The domain name is the unique name your Web site will have. It's what comes after "www". For "www.google.com", "google.com" is the domain name. Most Web design companies are more than happy to register this for you, even lock it so it can't be transferred. Problem is, that means you can't transfer it either. The worst case is that they don't register the domain name in your name, and so you don't even own it.
I will show you how to register your domain name, if your interested, but even if I do it for you, it will be registered in your name.
Hosting
Hosting is basically the computer where your Web site resides, and where it can be accessed by name. You want to use a reliable company to host your site. Setting up a Web site on a hosting account can be complicated. Buying hosting is about as complicated as buying a book on Amazon.com. You could use the link to the right to buy hosting at WestHost, a very good hosting company. If you do decide to buy hosting, be sure to select "Dedicated IP" if it's not included. It will be a dollar well spent.
Of course, I will be glad to set up hosting for you. Under certain circumstances I can even include hosting, at a reduced rate, as part of a Web site package.
My business approach is to be completely transparent about how the whole process of constructing your Web site works. If your not interested and don't want to know, I'll be glad to handle the whole process for you. On the other hand, if you want some control over your site, I'll be glad to provide limited services and let you do part of the job on your own.
Conclusion
Even if you don't use me to do your Web site, I hope you keep this advice in mind. You see, some other Web design companies are not quite so transparent. They are more than happy to set you up with a Web site for an easy monthly payment. What you don't know until you read the fine print in their contract is that you don't own anything on that Web site, and you can't move it, and maybe you don't even own the name. So, do ask questions and read the fine print.
